What have you done to reduce air pollution?

I now walk instead of taking a vehicle for short distances. I take the metro as soon as possible.

When did you start focusing on that?

When I read that the damage becomes irreversible.

Do you respect the rules that you impose on yourself?

Almost always.

Do you have health problems due to air pollution?

In 2007, after Diwali, I had a burning sensation in my eyes and was diagnosed with mild asthma.

What steps can a colony take to help reduce air pollution?

Stop using crackers and use public transport. Maybe make an e-manual with more tips.

What have you done to reduce air pollution?

I carpool with friends as often as possible and have organized the same for others in my colony. I use alternating current only when necessary. I have also adopted the use of ecological products.

When did you start focusing on that?

In 7th grade, when I saw the repercussions of firecracker smoke on my grandfather’s health as well as the effect on animals.

Do you respect the rules that you impose on yourself?

Yes.

Asthma.

What steps can a colony take to help reduce air pollution?

Carpooling for residents, meetings to raise awareness about saving electricity and sustainable living.

Have you influenced your friends?

Yes. And I definitely influenced my family on green options.

I have always participated in tree planting campaigns at school.

I garden every week, I take public transport and I am concerned about reducing my plastic consumption.

When did you start focusing on that?

One year ago.

Do you respect the rules that you impose on yourself?

Most. If I jump the bus, I carpool. I never miss my gardening sessions and continue to add more regularly.

Once, arriving in Delhi the day after Diwali, my eyes were burning and I had difficulty breathing.

What steps can a colony take to help reduce air pollution?

Gardening (even in a pot on a balcony) and using public transport.

My loved ones often share plants to make sure we keep gardening. I constantly urge people to garden.

“Carpooling is better than taking taxis, especially since it also keeps you safe during Covid times. Switch to electric vehicles if and when you can,” says Dr. Vikas Maurya, director of pulmonology, Fortis Hospital, Shalimar Bagh.

It’s the small steps that individuals take that can help a society, he adds: “So it’s crucial to influence your peers. Start by making tree planting a norm for birthdays. Go green in all aspects, whether it’s taking action to reduce soil, water or air pollution. Basic things like turning off the lights make a huge difference. Switch to solar energy. Reduce, reuse and recycle,” he says.
