It’s a new era for the quarterback of the Seattle Seahawks and Pittsburgh Steelers, who will face off in their respective openers on Saturday.

For Seattle, who traded Russell Wilson to the Broncos in March, the competition now comes down to Geno Smith, who has been on the team since the 2020 season, and Drew Lock, who was part of the Denver trade. Head coach Pete Carroll said Tuesday that Smith had taken the lead in the position battle and would start on Saturday, although Carroll added that Smith and Lock would get equal reps with starting receivers.

In Pittsburgh, Mitchell Trubisky has taken the lead in quarterback competition that comes on the heels of the January retirement of longtime starter Ben Roethlisberger. Trubisky signed with Pittsburgh in March to a two-year deal and has competed with Mason Rudolph and first-round pick Kenny Pickett.

“Mitch won in this league,” Steelers coach Mike Tomlin told CBS Sports on Tuesday. “The stats confirm that. He has more experience than the others, so we just thought it was appropriate to start there.”
