Ahead of Wednesday night’s Diamondbacks-Nationals game at Nationals Park, a program featuring military paratroopers triggered a brief national security alert. The United States Capitol was briefly evacuated, according to ESPN news services, when a plane carrying members of the US military’s Golden Knights was mistakenly classified by police as “a possible danger”.
Instead, the plane was heading to Nationals Park for a pre-game show in which the Golden Knights would be parachuted onto the field. The United States Capitol is about one mile from Nationals Park. The plane, which took off from Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, was circling in a restricted area and apparently did not give law enforcement advance notice of its arrival:
United States Capitol Police raised an alert and the Capitol was evacuated around 6:30 p.m. At 8:00 p.m., the buildings of the Capitol complex were reopened. That game itself at Nationals Park was unaffected. Pelosi also said that “Congress looks forward to considering the results of a thorough after-action review that will determine precisely what went wrong today and who at the Federal Aviation Administration will be held accountable for this.” outrageous and appalling mistake.”
