Did a sabbatical seriously help 2K Games and Visual Concepts fix its WWE 2K video game franchise? Yes, that’s damn true.

It’s not a secret WWE 2K20 sucked in and was an absolute embarrassment to the video game studio that blesses us with the NBA 2K franchise, which is a model of consistency despite some recent shortcomings. After enduring numerous complaints and tweets containing hilarious clips showing how broken the game was, 2K and Visual Concepts decided to shelve WWE 2K21 and focus on WWE 2K22promising a new game rebuilt from the ground up that would “hit differently”.

We were cautiously optimistic about the WWE 2K22, at one point even worried as we received our game review code a day before the embargo was lifted. Game reviewers know that’s usually a bad sign, pointing out that the studio isn’t too sure about its video game, which more than likely means it stinks. That brings us to our review, and we’re happy to report that WWE 2K22 restored our faith in wrestling video games.

In all honesty, after watching the clips and reading all the complaints, we avoided WWE 2K20 like the plague, and heading towards WWE 2K22, the bar was naturally low. Still, the team at Visual Concepts and 2K figured out the mission and easily erased it.

WWE 2K20 the game mechanics were as bad as legendary jobber Brooklyn Brawler in the ring. The clear mission for WWE 2K22, create a fun wrestling game and fix those janky ass controls. The game developers have accomplished this mission. While WWE 2K22 is not wwe no mercy Where WCW x NWO Revengeit almost gives us that exhilarating feeling of pulling off our favorite wrestler’s moves while playing these Nintendo 64 games.

Thanks to a more streamlined control scheme that includes a light attack, a heavy attack, a grappling hook button, as well as a dodge and reverse system, WWE 2K22 is no longer the overly complicated mess it once was. Gone are the days of having to enter ridiculous commands to pull off a Rock Bottom, Stone Cold Stunner, or RKO. Each wrestler has four special films, their finisher, their signature, a special knockdown called repayment and, of course, a submission film. To perform each of these moves, you need to build your special meter during the match. The player must hold down the R2 trigger and press the corresponding button when the meter is full. Also, keep in mind that depending on the wrestler you’re using, their moves require particular ring situations to encounter. With a super-simple tutorial mode featuring WWE Superstar Drew Gulak, you’ll acclimate to the enhanced controls in no time.

games like NBA 2K are widely loved to always capture the real energy felt during the game or watching your favorite team on TV. the WWE 2K22 the developers have kept this same energy. We honestly can’t think of a game that offers an authentic WWE experience.. While the crowd isn’t anything visually stunning, it’s how they react to the action in and out of the ring that stands out. From singing along to a particular wrestler’s entrance music to kicking off chants at just the right time, 2K and Visual Concepts show their talent for recreating sporting event experiences in their video games.

The arenas are also fantastic. Whether it be Monday night raw, Smack down, NXTor a pay-per-view event like Wrestlemania, all of every WWE show looks excellent. Even the Thunderdome, WWE’s pandemic setup, makes this cut and is accurately redesigned in-game.

With the most important part of the game easily fixed, how do the modes stack up? It’s here that WWE 2K22 stumble a bit. Once you press Start, you will be greeted by six modes:

  • Play (players can play in 11 different unique match types)
  • Showcase (Allows players to relive Rey Mysterio Jr’s greatest moments)
  • Universe (A simulation of the WWE schedule allowing players to use a WWE Superstar and compete in scheduled matches)
  • MyGM (Allows players to become Vince McMahon and run the show)
  • MyFACTION (Allows players to create a stable of WWE Superstars by collecting card packs)
  • MyRISE (A fully voiced story mode where players take on a newcomer to WWE stardom)

A fan of casual wrestling games might be a bit overwhelmed, while all of these options might be fine for an alley of hardcore wrestling stans. In MyRISE, you take a created player (not one you create using the Superstar Creation Tool) on the journey to becoming a WWE Superstar. It could be a great learning tool for those new to the WWE 2K video game franchise because it’s fun and rewarding once your created superstar finally goes to one of the TV wrestling shows and brings home a belt. Our biggest complaint has to be the cheesy dialogue you encounter throughout MyRISE which definitely sounds like something done during a pandemic.

MyGM isn’t for everyone and is for wrestling fans who take absolute joy in the intricacies of pro wrestling, like putting together PPVs, booking matches, building your own arenas, and guarding WWE Superstars. happy by giving them decent storylines. If you’ve ever wanted to step into Vince McMahon’s shoes, this mode gives you the perfect opportunity.

Unlike other modes, MyGM requires more attention because it’s like babysitting with you having to keep checking the morale of your superstars.

If you like MyTEAM in NBA 2Kyou will enjoy MyFACTIONS in WWE 2K22. It’s built on the same principle, with players acquiring card packs to create a stable of wrestlers that they can use to compete in unique matches to complete challenges for points to get more card packs. to unlock wrestlers. This mode was average for us. We also don’t care about the grind, which will eventually cause you to spend real money to get VC to buy more map packs.

Finally, Showcase Mode is something we really enjoyed. This year’s edition spotlights high-flying featherweight Rey Mysterio by taking players on a journey through his career and reliving some of his legendary wrestling moments. Now, okay, he’s missing some big matches due to permission issues (or Vince being cheap), and wrestling fans will notice. Still, we absolutely loved playing the mode and how it seamlessly switches between gameplay and actual WWE stock footage. It also really helps you appreciate the wrestler he’s focusing on and his long way to the top.

With WWE 2K22, 2K Games and Visual Concepts have proven it’s okay to take a break from annual releases and let the game breathe. It’s clear the team went back to drawing and really thought about the game and listened to the fans give them a really good wrestling video game that they could be proud of and excited to play. No, WWE 2K22 isn’t perfect, and some modes require more polish in particular areas. Ultimately, it lives up to its promise with an incredible roster of talents that will grow with DLC releases and its new game engine providing better gameplay.

With WWE 2K22we feel with 2K Games, Visual Concepts Kitchen, and we love it, and we think the fans will too.
